One of the biggest obstacles to digitalising a factory is that much of its equipment predates the digital age. These legacy machines are often reliable and productive, but they were never designed to share data. The legacy problem

In this way the machine’s existing outputs become a source of digital data. Combined with added sensors, this lets even an old machine participate in a connected factory, reporting its condition and activity into the systems that monitor the whole operation.
A gradual, low-risk path
The beauty of connecting legacy machines externally is that it can be done gradually and with little risk. A single machine can be instrumented as a trial, its data proving the value before the approach is extended. Because the machine’s operation is not altered, there is little danger of disrupting production. This makes digitalising legacy equipment a practical, incremental journey rather than a daunting wholesale replacement.
Connecting legacy machines to the digital world is a common and very solvable challenge. By adding sensing externally and bridging existing signals, even equipment built long before the digital age can report its condition and activity, gaining a digital voice without being replaced.
